If you’re still waiting for the big day, or even in the planning stages, preparing to bring a new child into your family is an exciting time. If you’re expecting, it’s also more important than ever before to take care of yourself. Although you may have support from friends, family and loved ones, it’s up to you to stay healthy during your pregnancy. Below are some TRICARE tips to give your baby a healthy start:
Consult your doctor as soon as you think you’re pregnant. Have regular prenatal care visits and tell your doctor if you experience any concerning signs, such as vaginal bleeding, dizziness, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, or anything else that seems abnormal.
Drink a lot of fluids, preferably water, throughout pregnancy to help your body keep up with the increases in your blood volume. Drink at least six-to-eight glasses of water, milk, or fruit juice daily.
Physical activity during pregnancy is important and can give you more energy and increase the likelihood of a faster recovery after delivery. Consult your doctor about starting an exercise routine that’s right for you.
Eat healthy. Enjoy 6-11 servings of grain products, 4-6 servings of milk and milk products, 3-5 servings of vegetables, 3-4 servings of meat and protein foods and 2-4 servings of fruits daily.
Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, especially before meals, after using the restroom and after handling raw meat.
Rest often. Lay on your side, especially your left side, as it provides the best circulation to your baby and helps to reduce swelling. Try placing a pillow between your knees to ease back discomfort.
Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco, drinking alcohol and exposing your body to chemicals and cleaning supplies during pregnancy. Consult your doctor about other foods, drinks or activities that you should avoid.
Prepare for Delivery. It’s never too early to prepare for labor and delivery. Consult your doctor about exercises that can get your body ready for labor. Write down a birth plan, including whether or not you want an epidural, and discuss your plan with your doctor and anyone who will be in the delivery room with you. Finally, get organized – write down a list of friends and family that need to be contacted when you go into labor, pack your hospital bag, and be sure your home is ready for baby to arrive. And don’t forget a reminder note to enroll your new baby in TRICARE Prime or TPR!
