GodSitting Next to 'God'
One spouse’s worst PCS ever.

by Marie Dyer, Registered User on Milspouse.com

My worst PCS was last January. My children—three of them-- and I left Baumholder, Germany six weeks before my husband so that we could enroll the children at a new school right after the Christmas/New Years holiday. The flight from Germany was perfect, but when we arrived to the states, all seven of our bags were lost. Next, the rental car company would not release the PRE-paid car to me because we were taking it out of state from Kentucky to Ohio, and my husband had the credit card--I only had a debit card. I even offered to PAY for the car with my debit card, that's how desperate I was.  Our only option was to take a cab to a hotel that was next to the bus station so we could catch a bus home.   The cab driver had to literally "smuggle" us into the hotel because he said the nearby drug addicts would be tempted to rob us when they saw our leather coats and laptops in tow.

The next morning, we boarded a Greyhound bus (big mistake) to go home.  I sat next to a man who literally thought he was God, and I was his bride (no joke...a man across from me whispered, "Lady, I swear I will not let this man hurt you" when he saw the panic on my face). For four hours, this man tried to hold my hand, and spoke words of adoration to the kids and me. Finally, “God” reached his final destination, and was about to leave the bus...but before doing so, LOUDLY serenaded me a horrible love song in front of the 60 passengers on the bus! Everyone turned around and stared at us (even the bus driver). He departed saying, "My wife, my love, we will be together again soon, I promise.  When he departed, I was not only embarrassed, but humiliated.  I promptly announced to everyone that I had no idea who the crazy man was, I was NOT HIS WIFE and my children were not his children. Luckily, we made it home safely, rented a car in my home city, and a few months later, I was reunited with my REAL husband of 20 years! What a nightmare!

oh my goodness! I expected to open this up and read all about how God had guided you through a PCS move, curious how if God was by your side, if was the worst PCS ever! I laughed so hard about the "bus God". I am so so sorry this happened to you and to your children. Thank you for sharing it and helping everyone put into perspective how bad it can sometimes be! :) Glad you made it home.

I sincerely hope the PCS Gods will be with you from this point forward. That sounds like a horrible experience. I am continually amazed at what we all do because we love our husbands, our children, and our country.

OMG, or in your case OYG (oh' your God). I guess that everyone of us has a story or three to tell about moving, and yet we all manage to see things in a different light when all has been said and done. I say to family and friends who don't understand packing up is always a mess in itself along with purging through our goods. then when our goods arrive it is much like Christmas opening each box to see whats inside and again purge. Military wives are usually really good and quick to get settled into a new home and often adapt the attitude that home is where the Army(what ever branch of service)sends you. We can all manage it seems to see life lessons in each move and learn to love at least just one thing about our new surrounding's. This has got to be one of the best things about military life to be able to experience different parts of the world and see really how people actually live. I have been so thankful to my husband for giving us floating roots, which means to be able to plant ourselves anywhere and always seem to grow from each of our destinations. He is retired now and has begun work as a contractor and greatfully enough we are still affiliated with much of the military and the opportunities to experience other parts of the world. Thank you for sharing your story with God..... Nikki

I am so sorry that you had to go through all of this...i know it must have been terrible, but it was also a little funny! Sorry, if it upsets you that I had to laugh about it, but you must have laughed at some point when it was over!(?)

PCS moves are a pain in the rear, especially by yourself with children moving overseas. I know because I've been there too. I'm sure you have a lot more strength and independence now. I'm glad you made it home safely, but there are 2 big red flags in your story: 1- Why were you traveling without a credit card? I travel a lot, by myself, with my child, to a foreign country, etc. and like the saying goes, "never leave home without it". Debit cards do not count as credit cards. 2- Why didn't you say something to the bus driver immediately for your protection and your children?

It’s PCS time again.  You load up the car, travel across the country and attempt to live comfortably on the few items stowed in the trunk.
