Pearls of Wisdom
by Tanya Queiro, 2009 Military Spouse of the Year
As the end of the calendar year approaches, I begin to question and reflect on lessons I learned this year. It is an annual practice of mine to review the year and write down “pearls of wisdom” discovered and/or reaffirmed through my growth and maturity as a professional and spiritual being.
My list this year includes:
- A kind deed lasts a lifetime. I can remember when a complete stranger helped changed my flat tire on the interstate in the rain; when friends and colleagues banned together to support me throughout the Military Spouse of the Year (MSOY) vetting process, and; when mentors cause paradigm shifts that permit me to expand my personal and professional goals.
- Truly believe in your cause and with patience, things will fall into place. At the beginning of the year, my husband believed in me enough to know I would be the MSOY national winner. I believed in assisting our wounded warriors and their family enough, that I against the advice of some, I changed careers and now work for the cause I advocate for.
- Everyone brings something to the table. Of course, I need to remember what’s on the menu and not all meals are cooked with the same seasonings
- Rejoice in life’s triumphs, no matter how small. A smile…beautiful weather…waking up each morning…you never what you have until they are gone.
- Think before you speak. An old adage, but one that is tried and true with every situation in life.
- Thank people in your life. It is amazing how a simple “thank you” can change the course of one’s day. Randomly thank those who help others, showing genuine appreciation for their sacrifice and efforts.
I look forward to another year of growth and to the wonders life has in store. What “pearls of wisdom” did you learn this year? Share them with me at tanya@milspouse.com
