Passing on the Torch

by Tanya Queiro, 2009 Military Spouse of the Year

As we journey into November, nostalgic memories of savory turkey dinners, Veterans Day parades, family get-togethers and absurdly hectic shopping days crowd my initial thoughts. Upon deeper reflection, I realize the silent suffering many of our military families endure, not only this month, but throughout the years, because their military member never returned home.

I can hear our fallen comrades’ words echo in Lt. Col. John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields.” “To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep.”

This Veterans Day, vigilantly hold the torch passed on by our service members calling attention to those who have fallen, those who horrendously suffered as prisoners of war, and those who still endure mental and physical trauma. Let the torch’s fierce blaze light the path of realization for those who do not comprehend and appreciate veterans’ sacrifices.

I personally will always carry the torch for fallen Marines Cpl. Jonathan Cohen, Staff Sgt. Edgar Heredia and Master Sgt. Paul Longo (Ret.). Johnny and Ed worked with my husband and were dear friends of our family. A decorated Vietnam veteran, Paul mentored my husband and me, demonstrating how to be a productive, well-rounded citizen and Marine. Their memories remain steadfast in my heart and their families will always part of our Marine Corps family.

Who will your torch blaze in remembrance of? Take a moment to reflect and faithfully act upon that reflection in deed or service.

Lastly, to my beloved United States Marine Corps, Happy 234rd Birthday!

God bless our veterans and military families! God bless America!
