2008 Military Spouse of the Year Awards Ceremony

Washington, D.C.-May 6, 2008

Senior officials and spouses gather to honor this year’s spouse of the year.

By MSM

In 1984 President Reagan proclaimed the Friday before Mother's Day of each year to be Military Spouse Appreciation Day in recognition of the "countless personal sacrifices" military spouses have made in support of the Armed Forces. This year, MSAD is this Friday, May 9th, 2008.

Tuesday, the veteran-owned Victory Media, Inc. hosted Military Spouse magazine’s Military Spouse of the Year Luncheon Honoring Chelle Brewer, 2008 Military Spouse of the Year (MSOY) at Washington, D.C.’s Ronald Reagan Building.  Chelle was selected as this year’s winner from a competitive field of candidates representing spouses of all US Armed Forces.

Representing this year’s MSOY sponsor, TriWest Healthcare Alliance, was CEO Mr. David McIntyre.  McIntyre presented the MSOY charity recipient, Thanks USA, with a $5000.00 check to provide educational support for military families.  “ThanksUSA is a great charity.  They provide scholarships to spouses and children of our men and women in uniform,” McIntyre said of the organization.  ThanksUSA was started by sisters, Rachel and Kelsi Okun, whose father, Bob Okun was on hand to accept the award on behalf of the charity.  “I am thrilled to represent ThanksUSA”, said the proud father about the award.

Mistress of ceremonies and co-founder of Military Spouse magazine, Babette Maxwell, opened the luncheon with remarks about the pioneering award for spouse.  “This is an award that has been a long time in coming.  A national award and platform for military spouses is truly an indicated of changing times,” Maxwell said.  “We are thrilled with support we’ve received from The White House and spouses of senior leadership who have made this award the flagship award for military spouses.”

The First Lady Laura Bush attended via recorded message to the MSOY and the community, taking time out her schedule to recognize spouses at the event, “Chelle was first recognized for her work with Soldier’s List.   It is the president’s and my honor to recognize her here today as Military Spouse magazine’s 2008 Military Spouse of the Year.”

Also speaking at the luncheon and award ceremony were Co-Chairs, Mrs. Sheila Casey, spouse of the Chief of Staff of the United States Army and Mrs. Karen Preston, spouse of the Sergeant Major of the United States Army.  “Chelle is an amazing woman,” Casey said, “and exemplifies the spouses in America who must juggle work and home life.”  Echoing Mrs. Casey’s remarks, Mrs. Preston went on to say, “Chelle is truly an inspiration.”

About being named this year’s Military Spouse of the Year, Brewer said, “This award means so much to all spouses from the World War II spouse to present day military spouses.”  The Army mother of a special needs child, Brewer is an ambassador family for the American Heart Association, multi-lingual teacher, charity founder, philanthropist and professional singer.

Her getting the award has NOTHING to do with her husbands rank. She was nominated because of all the work she does for fellow military spouses and soldiers. Do some research before bashing someone - ignorance isn't bliss. I speak from experience when I say that Chelle deserves this award. Do you personally know how much she saw her husband last year? I'm guessing not. Again I say - do your research - ignorance isn't bliss.

anangerlsmom- you clearly don't know Chelle, she works so hard and does so much for other military spouses. Congratulations Chelle, you sooo deserved this, and you look great!

I was very honored to be one of Chelle's guests at this event. Chelle gave a wonderfully inspiring speech, and was also gracious and modest in the midst of all the attention. Chelle accomplishes to much for so many people every day and she makes it look effortless. And just for the record, she **never ever** mentions her husband's rank, in fact, she declines to give it when it isn't pertinent to the situation.

Chelle, Congratulations! I know that you deserve recognition, yet share your award with all the military wives. Not only have you helped others, but have endured so much alongside your soldier. I honestly didn't know your DHs rank till I read it here. I am sorry that someone has tried to diminish your praise...but know they can never diminish your spirit! Congrats again!

I am a bit disappointed-I am a good military wife and do all the things whether I like it or not as best that I can. WHy should there be one winner. Remember spouses WE ARE ALL WINNERS!!

By all means I am not taking away her sunshine - I just think that we all should be recognized. It need not be a competition -

anglesmom sounds a wee bit bitter. First, rank doesn't matter-- we all endure the trials and tribulations of the military life. Ours is a volunteer militia-- if you don't like it, encourage your husband to find another job with the same stability and benefits. Sure, he's gone for 4-15 months here and there, but you're compensated financially and otherwise for the separation. Whinners aren't winners. Second, Chelle's husband is only a 2LT, who recently graduated OCS after doing his time as an enlisted. I have experienced the opposite of modesty in Chelle's acknowledgement of the award, but I'm sure the committee that selected her had good reason to do so. I believe this is one of those awards where you nominate yourself. If you want to win it next year, stop whining, get off your patooty and do something about it.

I believe this is one of those awards where you nominate yourself. Lol It must be nice when you are a high ranker.. why not honor a real woman and someone who's husband is not all over the news.. Hell come on. why not honor us real military wifes who dont see or talk to their husbands on a REG bases... this is sooo messed up.. You know, I really wish that people would take the time to research something before making comments like this. First, Chelle was nominated by her best friend of over 20 years, an enlisted spouse, just for the record, completely unbeknownst to her. Chelle was not even aware this award existed until she was notified that she had been selected as one of the ten finalists. Chelle then went through an interview process and was selected from the ten. Second of all, it really burns me when people make assumptions about people that they don't even know. Many of you have no idea who Chelle is other than what you read about on this website and several other publications, a lot which has been incorrect. Broaden your horizons a little and google her. You will find she has personally raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for organizations such as the American Heart Association, United Way, March of Dimes, USO, and founded Soldiers' List which is responsible for sending thousands of care packages to soldiers stationed overseas, while serving as leader of her Family Readiness Group. She assisted the American Red Cross in finding temporary housing for victims of Hurricane Katrina, and has taken in evacuees from Kosovo. Besides all of that, Chelle, just like countless other military spouses, holds things together on the homefront when her husband is away. She has an incredible amount of trials on her plate, not the least of which is her two-year-old daughter facing her third open heart surgery next month. So before you come on here and judge someone you don't even know, tell me, what are YOU doing to make your community and military a better place?
