Meet the 2009 Military Spouse of the Year
By Tanya Queiro
With all my experience with the Marine Corps I discovered very early that I didn’t know everything and if I kept an open mind and listened, I could find opportunities everywhere. The proverbial window of opportunity opened for me when I reported for duty as the 2009 Military Spouse of the Year. What a distinguished honor and privilege to represent military spouses around the world.
Now that I’m adjusting to my new post, I would like to take the opportunity to briefly reflect over my ideals and indicate what you can expect from me.
Military service is not a job, it’s a lifestyle. Just as our spouses serve, so do military spouses and their families. The easiest way to manage our unique lifestyle is through education and the sharing of resources. I have devised three strategies so that we can educate one another and share valuable resources.
First, I intend to create awareness within the military community, the media and the general public, for critical issues facing military spouses (particularly military spouses and family members of severely injured service members).
Second, I will listen intently to you noting the most significant issues affecting you. My third strategy consists of taking action to influence programs, services and legislation for our military families. Ultimately, I hope to be a catalyst, bolstering the voices of military spouses across the world, making you stronger, more vocal and more visible.
I hope you never forget the infinite possibilities that are borne of faith in yourself and others. Pass on the gifts you have received. I look forward to sharing with you in the future.
God bless our veterans and military families and God bless America!
