FundraisingFundraising Ideas for a Spouse Club

To raise money you only need volunteers and some good ideas.

by Anita Doberman

A spouses’ club can be an important part of your military experience regardless of your level of involvement. It offers social interaction, bonding, an opportunity to make new friends and support through trying times.  A spouses’ club can become a close-knit family in the midst of a large military community.

A club needs sufficient funds to host activities and reach out to other spouses.  The real challenge lies in dreaming up with the right fundraiser to get engage your members and get the cash flowing. Remember, there are as many ideas as there are military spouses, so roll up your sleeves and use your imagination. The possibilities are endless!

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Bake Sale. Okay, so it’s not exactly reinventing the wheel, but there’s a reason this is one of the most popular fundraisers. It’s easy to organize, allows less-involved spouses to participate and you can even get the kids involved.  What’s more irresistible than a 2 year old telling a potential buyer she helped “bwake” the cookies?  If baking is not an option, purchase wholesale candy and sell it. Set up your sale at your instillation or around town. Don’t forget to obtain approval from the venue first. Many retail locations are eager to show support for the military and will allow a foldout table or two.
  • A Luncheon for Active Duty Personnel.  This is another easy-to-participate in activity.  Have each member contribute a main dish, side, dessert, snack or drink. Hold the lunches monthly and pick a different theme for each one.  Or keep it simple and go potluck.  Charge around $5 a plate; it’s less than what many spend on a fast food lunch anyway.  Many commanders will enthusiastically allow spouses and kids to come by for scheduled spouse lunches, making it a wonderful way to raise money and spend time with your husband.
  • A Club Bracelet (or Necklace or Charm).  Aircrafts, vehicles, symbols–you name it, you can put it on a charm or necklace. Selling a specialized piece of jewelry within your club is an awesome way for spouses to unite and raise funds. Silicone bracelets are another option. Lance Armstrong started this trend with LIVESTRONG and many charities have followed suit. They’re inexpensive and available for order in bulk. Check out ReminderBand.com or Wristbands-4-Less.com for price information.
  • An Auction. Many members of the public are often willing to help but don’t know how. Hosting an auction is a great way to involve them. Artists can supply artwork or lessons. Restaurants can give out gift certificates. Stores can provide merchandise such as electronics and house appliances. It can help offset some of the spouses’ club’s larger expenses, such as scholarships. It’s fun to organize the event and, in the process, you can increase membership and connect with the community. Selling raffle tickets for the prizes is also a good tactic.
