Feds give military spouses a hiring break
Picture it…your spouse just received orders to a new duty station across the country. While he or she is excited at the news, you dread the news because you’ve established yourself in a promising career. Now you may have to give notice, quit your job, move across the country (or half way around the world) and begin searching for new employment. Sound familiar? Where are the breaks for military spouses and their careers?
Well, for those interested in a federal government career, you just received a potential break. The Office of Personal Management recently issued final regulations on a rule that could aid qualified military spouses in obtaining federal jobs quicker.
Three quick items up-front: (1) this is not a hiring preference, (2) this does not entitle you to a federal job, and (3) federal agencies are not required to use this new authority. If you meet certain requirements, federal agencies could hire qualified spouses noncompetitively beginning Sept. 11, 2009. Under this authority, there are no limitations on types of positions or grades. However you will have to be qualified for the position.
If interested in federal job opportunities, check out USA Jobs. When you apply, be sure to note in your cover letter or application that you would like to be considered under this authority as an eligible spouse.
Who knows, this may be the career break you are looking for! Do you expect to take advantage of this opportunity? Tell me how at tanya@milspouse.com.
