Five ways to refresh the way to see your job.

By MSCCN

It is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts.

  • Meditate, pray or take a few moments to focus on something other than your current emotions. Some people choose to do this regularly every day at the same time, no matter how they feel, to keep themselves from falling into the pattern of moodiness and bad attitude in their day-to-day lives.
  • Stop and think before you act on your attitude. Often, a bad attitude is the result of an emotion out of control, whether it is anger, frustration or hurt feelings. After you have calmed down, see whether you can isolate the source and resolve it for the time being or set it aside during the workday.
  • Take a short break to go to the restroom and freshen up, walk down the hallway to stretch your legs or drink some cool water. All these things will give you the feeling of being refreshed, allowing you to straighten your shoulders and get yourself in check.
  • Ask yourself whether you are acting professionally, and answer honestly. There is nothing worse than lying to yourself; it is the ultimate act of self-betrayal. If your attitude stems from a perceived offense, stop and ask yourself whether your response is appropriate or constructive. The truth is, 9 times out of 10 when a person is offended, the person who has offended him or her does not even know it.
  • Breathe! Breathe! Breathe! Take deep Lamaze-style relaxation breaths—in through the nose, out through the mouth—10 times very deeply. This type of breathing will lower your heart rate and increase your oxygen level, which immediately makes you feel better and calms you down.

Everyone has a bad day, and everyone makes mistakes, but allowing problems to rule you through a bad attitude has an impact on more people than just you. It also creates an uncomfortable situation for your co-workers and the other people you must deal with during the day.

A positive attitude and well-focused energy are two things that make an average person an incredible person. They also foster an environment of creativity and productivity. You can “attitude” yourself into a great career opportunity. Most employers will choose a good worker who is positive and energizing over a great person who wreaks emotional havoc on co-workers and managers.
