It doesn't always save to use coupons.

by Erin Prater

Entering a store with a pocket full of coupons does not guarantee savings.  Marketers are hoping you won’t think before you buy.

  • Coupons can actually be a catalyst to impulse buying.  They’re printed for the company’s benefit, not yours.  Carefully calculate possible savings before buying.  Use coupons only if they actually benefit you, or if you really want to try a product at a reduced price.
  • Know the cost of items you regularly buy.  Price them at several stores and keep the list handy so you know if you’re actually getting a good deal.
  • Check you receipt before you leave the store.  Most retailers are banking on the fact that you won’t.

Another way to make sure you're getting the best possible price on an item is to make sure another store like Acme,a commissary, Shoprite, etc does/does not have the same item for a cheaper price. It pays to go through the sales ads if your local grocery stores, either online or the paper ads. Make a meticulous list and menu each and every time you go food shopping. Watch the cashier ring up your items ands scan your coupons to make sure you are being charged the correct price. I have caught many scanning mistakes at my commissary and civilian grocerys tore because the cashier isn't paying attention. Use reusable grocery bags! Masny civilian stores are now offering up to 5 cents off your food bill for each reusable bag you use. Shoprite is one of the big stores that is consistent with this practice. Do the math before you walk into any store. Keeping a spreadsheet of the items you buy, when you bought them, where you bought them and how much they were will help you compare prices. Don't be brand loyal unless it is necessary like an allergy to certain ingredients. Companies are banking (literally) on the fact that you won't compare their item to another no-name brand or cheaper brand. Don't forget about stores like RiteAid, Walgreens, and CVS for toiletries and other personal products. They often offer their own coupons which can be stacked with a regular manufacturer's coupon for additional savings. These types of stores are also great for rebates! Take advantage of rebates! Oragnize your coupons into a system that works for YOU and keep it organized that way you'll be more likely to take your coupons with you everywhere and be able to find what you need effectively. Once you are organized, staying on top of sales ads and acquiring coupons is easy!
