Blessings Abound

by Tanya Queiro, 2009 Military Spouse of the Year

As the year comes to end, I remember to count my blessings, even those that came in disguise. The month of December carries a special meaning for me, reminding me to take time to show my family, friends and neighbors my sincere appreciation and love, as you never know when or if you will see them again. In December 1997, my mother passed away when another’s car brakes failed and slammed into the car carrying my mom, stepfather and 15-year-old little brother.

Forever the life of party and the center of family events, the unexpected loss of my mother rocked my family and spiritual foundation. At the time, I was a young wife of almost two years, new mother of a one-year-old, and an active duty Marine moving up the ranks. My mother was my personal compass rose, steadfast in her support and guidance to me as I navigated through the turbulent waters of marriage, motherhood, life and the Marine Corps. Twelve years later, I look back and celebrate my mother’s enduring wisdom and legacy, my spiritual growth in forgiveness, and my wake up call that nothing in life is forever.

I tell you about my mother to remind each of us of the blessings of family, heartwarming memories, time, support and love. Whether you are far away or right around the corner from home, reach out to not only the important people in your life, but ones who may need your support. Give thanks and reflect on your many blessings, as well as remembering those individuals and families who are struggling.

God bless our veterans and military families! God bless America!
