in-law-rules7 Rules for His Mom at Homecoming

How to set boundaries for the MIL reunion visit

by Michelle Cuthrell

If your mother-in-law keeps asking when she can fly in for the homecoming, our combat-tested military spouses have some relationship-saving advice to prevent a MIL disaster. Here are seven topics to discuss before the big day:

  1. Does the MIL get to physically pick up the Soldier from post or does she just get to be at the house when you arrive home as a family?
  2. Who gets to hug and kiss the Soldier first?
  3. Where will the MIL stay during the visit? How will you ensure that you have plenty of space for physical intimacy with your Soldier
  4. How long is appropriate for MIL to stay in the area?
  5. How will you both get alone time with your Soldier? (Can one babysit while the other enjoys a date? Who gets to go first?)
  6. What are your Soldier’s needs during this reintegration period? How can you both respect them?
  7. What are both of your needs during this reintegration period? How can you make sure you accommodate one another?

Who has a key to your home? Even if the keys you were given say “do not copy,” chances are someone out there could gain entry if the locks weren’t changed when you moved in.
